Nonprofit Devoted to Preserving the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District Receives Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant

MINNEAPOLIS–The Friends of Milwaukee Avenue Historic District (FMAHD) has received a $34,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to resurvey the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District.

The goal of this survey is to discover what contributing and non-contributing resources need to be updated in order to correctly preserve Milwaukee Avenue Historic District homes for future generations. The resurvey will also inform and direct future preservation planning for the district.

“The Milwaukee Avenue Historic District is among the most cherished historic districts in Minneapolis for its unique character and history. The pedestrian-only row of 19th century brick worker's cottages are enjoyed by residents, neighbors, and tourists throughout the year,” says FMAHD President Debbie Randorf. “This project will support documentation and preservation of the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District by updating public documents and creating a stronger collection of written materials which will aid in the continued preservation and interpretation of the district for many years to come.”

The project period for this grant is from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027 with final reporting presented in June 2027.

This project is made possible in part by the people of Minnesota through a grant funded by an appropriation to the Minnesota Historical Society from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
